Wake County is located in the north central region of North Carolina. Raleigh is the county seat. The county was created in 1771 from portions of Cumberland County, Johnston County, and Orange County. It was named in honor of colonial Governor William Tyron’s wife, Margaret Wake. In order to obtain a marriage license in Wake County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
