Haywood County is located in the southwest region of North Carolina. Waynesville is the county seat. The county was created in 1808 and named in honor of then North Carolina State Treasurer, John Haywood. The total area of the county is 555 square miles. According to the 2010 census, there are 59,036 residents living in the county. Haywood County is bordered in the north by Cocke County, in the northeast by Madison County, in the east by Buncombe County, in the south by Transylvania County, in the southwest by Jackson County, in the west by Swain County, and in the northwest by Sevier County.
