Caldwell County, North Carolina

Caldwell County is located in the state of North Carolina. The county was formed in 1841 from parts of Wilkes County and Burke County. The county was named after Joseph Caldwell, presiding professor and the first president of the University of North Carolina. Lenoir is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 83,029 people and a total area of 474 square miles, of which 2.7 square miles is water and 472 square miles is land. Caldwell County borders the following counties: Watauga County to the north, Wilkes County to the northeast, Alexander County to the east, Catawba County to the southeast, Burke County to the south, and Avery County to the northwest.
