Yates County is located in the state of New York. The county was formed in February 5, 1823 and named after Joseph C. Yates. The county seat is Penn Yan. As of 2010, the county has a population of 25,348. The county has a total area of 376 square miles, 338 square miles of which is land, and 38 square miles is water. The county consists of 13 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 14527 recorded as the one with the largest population. Yates County borders the following counties: Schuyler County, New York to the south; Seneca County, New York to the east; Ontario County, New York to the northwest, and; Steuben County, New York to the southwest.

The mission of the County Clerk’s Office is to record, file and preserve a variety of records and to process and issue a variety of documents. The County Clerk serves as Clerk of the State Supreme and County Courts and is responsible for filing and maintaining court files. The County Clerk also administers Oaths of Office. Oaths of office are filed in the Clerk’s office. A directory of county, town and village officials, with their contact information, is maintained by the office.
