Rensselaer County, New York

Rensselaer County islocated in the state of New York. The county was created in 1791 from an area that was originally part of Albany County. The county was named after the family of Kiliaen van Rensselaer, the original Dutch owner of the land in the area. Troy is the largest city in the county and also the county seat; the other city in the county is Rensselaer. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 159,429 people and a total area of 665 square miles, of which 13 square miles is water and 652 square miles is land. Rensselaer County borders the following counties: Washington County to the north; Bennington County, Vermont, to the northeast; Berkshire County, Massachusetts, to the southeast; Columbia County to the south; Greene County to the southwest; Albany County to the west; and Saratoga County to the northwest.

Frank Merola is the current Rensselaer County Clerk, as of 2015. The Records Department of the County Clerk’s office is the main recording center for documents relating to real estate, such as mortgages, deeds, and other land records in the county. The Records Department is also the central recording office for most court records, including Supreme and County court cases, foreclosures, judgments, mechanics’ liens, divorces, veterans’ discharges, and other miscellaneous documents. In addition, it is the main office for passports, pistol permits, and amendments, and the central registry for all county notaries public and Commissioners of Deeds.

Public records can be accessed either by visiting the County Clerk’s office in person or doing a background check online. Remember that birth records are not public record in the state of New York. A request for a death record of someone who died in the county can be requested in person.
