Humboldt County, Nevada Overview

Humboldt County is located in the U.S. state of Nevada. The county was formed in 1861 and named after Humboldt River, named in turn for Alexander von Humboldt, a German naturalist and explorer. The county seat is Winnemucca. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2015, the county has a population of approximately 17,019 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has an area of 9,658 square miles of which 9,641 square miles is land and 17 square miles is water. Humboldt County borders the following counties: Harney County, Oregon to the northwest; Malheur County, Oregon to the north; Owyhee County, Idaho to the northeast/Mountain Time Border; Elko County to the east; Lander County to the southeast; Pershing County to the south and Washoe County to the west. Humboldt County Assessor’s Office Information

The Assessor appraises or establishes a value for all real property in the county for taxation purposes. The Assessor sets the taxable value of each property after the appraisal. The property is assessed at 35% of its current appraised or taxable value. Real property includes land, homes, and commercial buildings. In addition to valuing real property, the Assessor must value personal property of approximately 500 businesses from million dollar casinos to one person operations, over 5,000 mobile and manufactured homes, aircraft, and any other taxable personal property. The Assessor does not make the laws which affect property owners. The tax laws are made by the Nevada Legislature. The tax dollars on real property are collected by the Humboldt County Treasurer.

Humboldt County Clerk’s Office Information

The County Clerk issues marriage licenses, maintains marriage license records, acts as clerk to the 6th Judicial District Court, and maintains the court records for the District Court. The County Clerk acts as the Clerk to the Board of County Commissioners and maintains minutes of the meetings of the Board of County Commissioners. In addition, the County Clerk also serves as Clerk to the Debt Management Commission and the County Board of Equalization.

The Clerk also serves as the Voter Registrar and Chief Election Official in Humboldt County. The Clerk’s office maintains voter registration records, conducts all County elections and maintains candidate filing information.

The County Clerk administers the County’s indigent services program, files and maintains fictitious name certificates, files and maintains notary information in Humboldt County, licenses ministers to perform marriages in Humboldt County and issues County business licenses.
