Seward County can be found in the southeast region of Nebraska. Seward is also the name of the county seat. The county was created in 1855 but only organized in 1867. Originally, the county was called Greene County. It was only in 1862 that its name was changed to Seward in honor of the US Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, William H. Seward. According to the 2010 census, the county covers 576 square miles and has a population of 16,750. The surrounding counties are Butler County in the north, Lancaster County in the east, Saline County in the south, and York County in the west. The County Clerk is responsible for issuing marriage licenses as well as special designated licenses such as tobacco licenses and liquor licenses.
