Cascade County, Montana

Cascade County is located in the state of Montana. The county was formed in 1887 and named after the falls on the Missouri River (cascade means waterfall in French). Great Falls is the largest city in the county and also the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 81,327 people, making it the fifth-most populous county in Montana. It covers a total area of 2,711 square miles, of which 13 square miles is water and 2,698 square miles is land. Cascade County borders the following counties: Teton County to the northwest, Choteau County to the northeast, Judith Basin County to the east, Meagher County to the south, and Lewis and Clark County to the west.

The Cascade County Clerk and Recorder’s office is responsible for filing, recording, and maintaining public records in the county. The County Clerk and Recorder records real estate and personal property documents, birth and death certificates, plats, and surveys; maintains county wide accounting and financial reporting system, budgets and fixed asset control, and accounts payable; administers District Court Reimbursement and Missile Snow Removal programs; and issues burn permits.

The public can access records maintained by the County Clerk and Recorder dating back to1988. In addition, the public can view the indexing information from land documents at no charge. To access recorded document images dating back to 2001, in addition to the indexed information, you will have to register with the County Clerk and Recorder by completing an application and signing a contract. The fee for this service is $150.00 per year and must be paid in advance. In order to obtain a marriage license in Cascade County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
