Broadwater (1840-1892), a pioneer in the area and colonel in the United States Army. The county seat is Townsend. Broadwater County Clerk and Recorder / Treasurer/Superintendent of Schools and Elections Administrator’s Office Information

The primary administrative duty of the Clerk and Recorder’s Office is recording and maintaining the legal documents relating to real estate records, land descriptions, county birth and death records, and the records of the Board of County Commissioners. The documents that are recorded and filed are: deeds, mortgages, powers of attorney, military discharges, oil and gas leases, liens, certificates of surveys and subdivision plats. The Clerk and Recorder’s Office also maintains and issues birth and death certificates. In addition, the Clerk is also the Election Administrator of Broadwater County and oversees all aspects of the primary, local, and general elections.

The Treasurer’s department of Broadwater County handles the collection of property taxes (real, personal, centrally assessed, and mobile homes), motor vehicle registrations and renewals, the issuance of itinerant business licenses, the collection and deposit of funds from other Broadwater County departments, the recording and maintaining of real estate records, the filing of certain types of security interests, the maintenance of vital statistics records (e.g., birth certificates, death certificates, and veterans records), and the filing and maintaining of many public records for the County.
