The county was formed in 1843 and named after James Lawrence, an American naval officer best known for his last words “Don’t give up the ship!”. The county seat is Mount Vernon. Lawrence County Clerk’s Office Information

The County Clerk serves as the County Budget Officer and Clerk to the County Commission. The County Clerk is also the election authority for the county and its political subdivisions, and is responsible for conducting all public elections. The County Clerk is responsible for all voter registration activities in the county as well. The County Clerk is responsible for processing payroll and administering certain benefits for county employees, collecting and compiling payroll records for each employee from the various county departments, entering and processing payment of paychecks. The County Clerk is held responsible for payroll deductions, overseeing the administration of insurance and retirement benefits.
