Leflore County Overview

Established in 1871, Leflore County, Mississippi was named for Greenwod LeFlore, the Choctaw leader who signed the treaty ceding land to the US in exchange for the Indian Territory land. The county seat and largest community is Greenwood. It is in the Mississippi Delta region, with its southern border formed by the Yazoo River. Its riverfront lands were developed before the Civil War as cotton plantations. More inland areas were developed in the later 19th century. Leflore County, which is still largely rural, is noted for having the highest level of child poverty of any county in the United States. Mechanization of agriculture reduced jobs available for many workers in the 20th century, and there are few opportunities. The population has declined dramatically since its peak in 1930 as people continue to leave for opportunities elsewhere. As of the 2010 census, the population was 32,317. The total area of the county is 593 square miles of land, plus 14 square miles of water. Adjacent counties are: Tallahatchie to the north, Grenada to the northeast, Carroll to the east, Holmes to the southeast Humphreys to the southwest and Sunflower to the west. Leflore county is home to the nationally protected Mathews Brake National Wildlife Refuge and partially home to Theodore Roosevelt National Wildlife Refuge. The most populous of the 12 zip codes assigned to the county is 38930.
