Itawamba County Overview

Established in 1836, Itawamba county, Mississippi was named for the Chickasaw leader, who was known to English speaking settlers as Levi Colbert. As of the 2010 census, the population was 23,401. Both the county seat and largest community is Fulton. The county was the site of the 2010 Itawamba County School District prom controversy when a lesbian student attempted to bring her partner to prom. The county has a total area of 533 square miles of land, plus seven square miles of water. Adjacent counties are: Tishomingo county, MS to the northeast, Franklin county, AL to the east, Marion county, AL to the southeast, Monroe county, MS to the south, and Prentiss county, MS to the northwest. The county is home to the nationally protected Pharr Mounds (near Tupelo), 85-acre complex of earthwork burial mounds from the Middle Woodland period. The largest of ten zip codes assigned to the county is 38843.

Duties:

  • Keeps a general court docket in which all names and parties in each case, plea, indictment, records from inferior courts on appeal, and other papers are entered
  • Keeps orders of the court which are referenced in the minute book
  • Keeps the execution docket
  • Enters a full and complete record of the proceedings of the suit
  • Serves as a registrar for voters in the county
  • Collects a filing fee from candidates pursuing a county office or legislative seat within the county
  • Works with the election commission to provide election information (results, candidates, etc.)
  • Notifies citizens who have been selected to serve on jury duty
  • Prepares a jury list for the attorneys
  • Familiarizes jurors with the courthouse
  • Receives and files all documents during trials
  • Issues subpoenas
  • Conveys jury instructions given by the judge
  • Receives verdicts of jurors and reads them in open court
  • Issues jurors a county warrant (check) and certificate of service (if needed)
  • Files a Statistical Record of Marriage with the Office of Vital Records with the Mississippi State Department of Health
  • Issues the marriage license

Collects a filing fee of $22 per marriage record prepared from the applicant
