Franklin County Overview

Established in 1809, and named for Founding Father, Benjamin Franklin, Franklin County had a population of 8,118 as of the 2010 census. It is the fourth least populous county in the state. While the county seat is in Meadville, the largest community is Bude. The county is bisected by the Homochitto River, which runs diagonally through the county from northeast to southwest. A portion of the nationally protected Homochitto National Forest is also within the county’s borders. The total area of he county is 564 square miles of land, plus three-square miles of water. Neighboring counties are: Jefferson to the north, Lincoln to the east, Amite to the south, Wilkinson to the southwest, and Adams to the west. Of the seven zip codes assigned to the county, 39653 is the most populous.
