Oceana County, Michigan Overview

Oceana County is located on the western border of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula and has 1,306 total square miles. Over 60% of this (794 square miles) is water from Lake Michigan. On the north the county is bordered by Mason County, to the south Muskegon County, to the east Newaygo County and to the west is Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. Approximately 26,245 people lived in the county during the 2013 census. The County Clerk is responsible for vital records information including marriage, birth and death records. Personal protection orders, military discharges, concealed weapons permits, voter records, assumed names, circuit court filings, election information and divorce documents are also stored and maintained by the County Clerk. These records are available by in person request and many forms to make the request are also available online. Other documents and actual records are not available online.

The Register of Deeds is responsible for all property related information, including deeds, mortgages, leases and liens. This information is available as public record and can be requested in person, during normal business hours. There is the ability for a records search online, however most of the information related to this department is available by in person request only. There is also a fee associated with requests.

The assessment office is responsible for the equalization of all tax assessments within the county to create a fair and accurate representation of taxable value.

All documents in the assessment office are considered public record and are available for purchase, however property searches with and without GIS are the only ones available online. Other information available includes information about plats and parcels, surveys, taxable valuation methods, assessment and tax rolls and aerial images. These documents can be requested directly from the office, during normal business hours.

Oceana Court Records Information

Oceana County does not make their court records available online, however these records are available for in person request. Anyone can request the documents from a court case directly to the court and receive copies of documents for a set fee. Fees are assessed based on a variety of information about the case documents themselves. Most court cases are considered public record, however some may be fully or partially sealed.

In order to obtain a marriage license in Oceana County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
