Arenac County, Michigan Overview

A little closer to the center of Michigan, Arenac County is located on the coast of Lake Huron. Comprised of approximately 681 square miles, with almost half of that taken up with water (317 square miles) it had 15,487 people at the 2013 census. Bordered on the south by Bay County and the west by Gladwin County, the north is taken up by both Iosco County and Ogemaw County. No documents are available via the county website, from the County Clerk or the Court Clerk, however many documents are considered public record. These documents are available to request in person from the clerk during normal business hours. Forms are available on the website for DBA applications and marriage licenses and election information for the last several local elections are also available on the website.
The Register of Deeds for Arenac County takes care of recording legal papers and documents that deal with transfers as well as encumbrances or land and property located within Arenac County. All of these documents are considered public record once they are recorded in the office and therefore can be reviewed, copied or requested by anyone who wants them, for a fee.

Known as the Equalization Department, the Assessment Department for this county takes care of cash value for properties and other areas within the county and all information is available online.

Information about what the equalization department does is available on the website, however specific information is available only by visiting the office in person during normal business hours and is not available online. The only exception is documents related to official buildings including fire departments and schools and top tax payers in the county.

Arenac Court Records Information

Court records from the 81st District Court are not available online, however these can be purchased directly from the court itself, in person, during normal business hours. Copies of records are $1 per page, with certified records a set $10 fee plus $1 per page. Record searched can be conducted for $5 if new records are needed to be compiled for the request.

In order to obtain a marriage license in Arenac County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
