This county toward the northern end of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula is actually a small county of only about 1,695 square miles. With approximately 66% of that taken up by water (1,123), that doesn’t leave a whole lot of land, but the lakes, rivers and glaciers that surround it make for something unique. Surrounded to the south by Alcona County, the east by Montmorency County and Presque Isle County to the north, it’s actually located exactly halfway between the North Pole and the equator. At the 2013 census the area hosted only 29,091 people and has 8 zip codes. Most of the population lives in 49707; however other zip codes include 49744, 49746, 49747, 49753, 49766, 49776 and 48762.

Alpena County Clerk Information

The County Clerk in Alpena is actually the Court Clerk as well and is responsible for all duties of both positions. This includes controlling court files, administering oaths, registering vital statistics such as births, deaths and marriages, issuing marriage licenses, reviews, death certificates, supervising elections, tabulating election results and maintaining county expenditures and assets. This is alongside taking care of accounts payable and county payroll checks, tax withholdings and other financial documents, issuing concealed weapons permits, certifying businesses, filing veteran’s discharges and processing notary applications.
Most documents that are processed through the County Clerk’s office are public record and are therefore available for the general public. These records are available in one of two ways. The register of deeds for Alpena County is responsible for recording transfers and sales of property, all mortgages, records liens, fixture filings, oil, gas and mineral leases, probates, deeds and other transactions.
