Allegan County, Michigan

Allegan County is located in the state of Michigan. The boundaries of the county were created by the legislature in 1831, but the county was not organized until it was 1835. The county’s name was coined by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft to sound like a Native American word. Holland is the largest city in the county, while Allegan is the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 111,408 people and a total area of 1,833 square miles, of which 1,008 square miles is water and 825 square miles is land. Allegan County borders the following counties: Ottawa County to the north; Kent County to the northeast; Barry County to the east; Kalamazoo County to the southeast; Van Buren County to the south; Lake County, Illinois, to the southwest; Kenosha County, Wisconsin, to the west; and Racine County, Wisconsin, to the northwest.

The Allegan County Register of Deeds Office is the official center for all recorded documents relating to land transactions in the county. Records maintained at the Register of Deeds Office include but are not limited to deeds, mortgages, liens and lease agreements. When documents are presented to the office for recording, they are recorded in a book, called a “liber”, which is stamped on the deed or document. The original copy is they mailed back to the owner. A copy or image of the document is then duplicated as a permanent record. After a document is recorded, it becomes a public record, which can be reviewed or copied by the public.

Records that are maintained by the Register of Deeds can be accessed by visiting the Register of Deeds’ office at 113 Chestnut Street, Allegan, MI 49010, during office hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m – 4:00p.m.). You will be required to present a written request with the details of the records you are requesting.
