Worcester County is located in the state of Massachusetts. The county was formed on April 2, 1731, from the western portion of the original Middlesex County, the eastern portion of colonial Hampshire County, and the extreme western portion of the original Suffolk County. The largest city and traditional county seat is the city of Worcester. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 798,552 people and a total area of 1,579 square miles, of which 68 square miles is water and 1,511 square miles is land, making it the largest county in Massachusetts by area. Worcester County borders the following counties: Cheshire County, New Hampshire, to the north; Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, to the north/northeast; Middlesex County to the east/northeast; Norfolk County to the east/southeast; Providence County, Rhode Island, to the south/southeast; Windham County, Connecticut, to the south; Tolland County, Connecticut, to the south/southwest; Hampden County to the west/southwest; Hampshire County to the west; and Franklin County to the west/northwest.
