York County is located in the state of Maine. The county was formed in 1636; it is the oldest county in Maine and one of the oldest in the United States. Biddeford is the largest city in the county, while Alfred is the county seat.  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 197,131, making it the second-most populous county in Maine. It covers a total area of 1,270 square miles, of which 279 square miles is water and 991 square miles is land. York County borders the following counties: Oxford County to the north; Cumberland County to the northeast; Rockingham County, New Hampshire, to the southwest; Strafford County, New Hampshire, to the west; and Carroll County, New Hampshire, to the northwest.

The York County Registry of Deeds is the official county recorder and is charged with the responsibility of maintaining all public records in the county.
