Hancock County, Maine

Hancock County is located in the state of Maine. The county was incorporated on June 25, 1789, and named after John Hancock, the first governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Ellsworth is the largest city in the county and also the county seat.  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 54,418 people and a total area of 2,345 square miles, of which 758 square miles is water and 1,587 square miles is land. Hancock County borders the following counties: Penobscot County to the north, Washington County to the northeast, and Waldo County to the west.

The Hancock County Register of Deeds is the official recorder of the county. Tax liens, water liens, deeds, mortgages, declaration of homestead, and many other kinds of documents relating to title and ownership of real estate are recorded permanently in the office of the Register of Deeds. In addition, the office keeps records of plan maps, leases, and atlases of the cities and towns located in Hancock County. Registry records date back to 1790; however, some very old record books have been “retired”, but are available on microfilm and online from 1731 to date. All the records are available for public inspection.

The Register of Deeds is responsible for all documents related to property within the county. This includes mortgages and deeds as well as land surveys, liens and affidavits. These documents are generally considered public record and can be requested at any time, directly from the office. Additional documents available within this office include marriage, death and birth records, notary oaths and military discharges. While these documents are not considered public record they can be requested by the person that they are about. All requests can be made directly at the office, during normal business hours, but only a few records are available online.
