Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana

Tangipahoa Parish is located in the state of Louisiana; the parish was formed on March 6, 1869. Tangipahoa comes from an Acolapissa word meaning “those who gather corn” or “ear of corn.” Hammond is the largest city in the parish, while Amite City is the parish seat. The Tangipahoa Parish Clerk of Courts is charged with the responsibility of filing conveyance, mortgage, and miscellaneous documents deposited in Tangipahoa Parish. When documents are presented to the office for recordation, they are given an entry number with the date, hour, and minute of filing, as well as a book and page number. The documents are then indexed and merged into the current year indices for use by the public. Unlike most states, the original documents presented to be recorded are not sent back to the owner. The Recording Department also files, free of charge, deputy clerks of court’s oaths of office of notaries, sheriff’s deputies, and other parish officials, as well as medical certificates, military discharge forms, and ordination papers.
