Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana

Calcasieu Parish is located in the state of Louisiana; the parish was created on March 24, 1840. The name Calcasieu comes from the Atakapan word “quelqueshue” meaning “crying eagle”. Lake Charles is the largest city in the parish and also the parish seat; other cities in the parish include DeQuincy, Sulphur, and Westlake. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the parish has a population of approximately 192,768 people and a total area of 1,094 square miles, of which 31 square miles is water and 1,064 square miles is land. Calcasieu Parish borders the following: Beauregard Parish to the north; Jefferson Davis Parish to the east; Cameron Parish to the south; Orange County, Texas, to the west; and Newton County, Texas, to the northwest.

The Recording Department of the Calcasieu Parish Clerk of Court’s office receives and records all documents that are not part of a civil or criminal case in the parish. The department is responsible for recording in several indices managed by the Clerk of Court. The department maintains the transfer of property in the Conveyance Books, and judgments and liens are recorded in the Mortgages Book.
