Open Public Record Act:
Louisiana’s Public Records Law gives any person the right to examine any documentary materials which were used, are being used, or retained for use by a government body. However, certain records are exempted such as records of criminal investigations, medical records, welfare applications, disciplinary activities of professional licensing boards, and certain personnel records.
Birth Records:
The Louisiana Vital Records Registry maintains records of births that have occurred within the state. All birth records are strictly confidential until 100 years after the year of birth. Records of births that are older than 100 years are only available at the Louisiana State Archives. For records that are not 100 years old, only the following individuals are eligible to order a birth certificate:
To obtain a copy of a birth certificate, you can submit a request in person at the Vital Records Central Office, at the Clerks of Court office, or use a Vital Records Kiosk. You can also submit a request by mail along with a copy of your photo ID and the correct fees. Standard processing time for mailed requests is 8-10 weeks. You can also submit a request online, by phone, or by fax through a third party vendor, VitalChek. The cost of a birth certificate is $15 per copy. A birth certificate plus birth card (short form) costs $24 per pair.
Death Records:
The Louisiana Vital Records Registry maintains records of deaths that have occurred in the state. Death records are strictly confidential until 50 years after the year of death. For records of deaths older than 50 years, you can obtain copies from the Louisiana State Archives. Only the following individuals are considered eligible to order a death certificate:
All requests must include a completed application, proper identification, and the appropriate fees. Requests can be submitted in person to the Central Office, Clerks of Court office, or using the Vital Records Kiosks. Requests can also be submitted by mail. The standard processing time is 8-10 weeks. You can also send a request to a third party vendor, VitalChek, online, by phone, or by fax. The cost of a death certificate is $7.
Missing People:
The Louisiana Repository for Missing and Unidentified Persons Information Program is a database of the state’s missing and unidentified people. You can search through the database using keywords or browse through the entire database. Each case file contains the photo of the missing person (if provided), the name, the date missing, the physical description, availability of dental and DNA records, case #, and contact information of the law enforcement agency handling the case.
Elected Officials:
The list of elected officials can be found in the Lousiana Government Website, specifically in their voter portal. You’ll be able to view several details regarding any elected official such as their name, phone, and address as well as their end of term and their party, race, and gender. You can also check who previously held the office. For example, you’ll be able to get information on the current governor, John Bel Edwards, and see the previous governors of the state such as Bobby Jindal and Kathleen Babineaux Blanco.
