Johnson County is located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The county was formed in 1843 and named after Richard Mentor Johnson, the former Vice President of the United States (1837–41). The county seat is Paintsville. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 23,449 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 264 square miles of which 262 square miles is land and 2.2 square miles is water. Johnson County borders the following counties: Lawrence County to the north; Martin County to the east; Floyd County to the south; Magoffin County to the southwest and Morgan County to the northwest. The Johnson County Clerk is responsible for various kinds of duties which include performing clerical duties of the fiscal court: issuing marriage, boat, hunting/fishing licenses, registering vehicles, collecting various motor vehicles taxes and fees, recording and keeping various land and legal records, registering and purging voter rolls, and conducting elections. The Clerk’s Office also provides notary public bonds and collects delinquent taxes. Land records include deeds, condominiums, corporate records, fixture and other UCC filings, land records fees, land use restrictions, liens, mortgages, plats, releases, and wills. All the recorded documents are open to the general public and can be inspected online or by visiting the clerk’s office in person during office hours.
