Saline County, Kansas

Saline County is located in the state of Kansas. The county was formed on February 15, 1860, and named after the Saline River. The largest city and county seat is Salina; other cities in the county include Assaria, Solomon (partly in Dickinson County), Gypsum, Brookville, Smolan, and New Cambria. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 55,606 people and a total area of 721 square miles, of which 1.1 square miles is water and 720 square miles is land. Saline County borders the following counties: Ottawa County to the north, Dickinson County to the east, Marion County to the southeast, McPherson County to the south, Ellsworth County to the west, and Lincoln County to the northwest.  

The Saline County Clerk is charged with the following responsibilities:

  • Maintaining county records
  • Preparation for elections, including voter registrations
  • Filing the annual budgets for Saline County
  • Collecting fish and game license fees
  • Preparing state required reports

The office of the Register of Deeds files and records documents relating to real estate in the county. These documents include agreements, easements, powers of attorney, assignments, releases, oil and gas leases, plats, surveys, real estate related death certificates, military discharges, deeds, affidavits, and mortgages. In addition, the Register of Deeds also files financing statements or UCC’s (Uniform Commercial Code).

All records in this office are open to the public, and the public can inspect and obtain copies, with the exception of military discharges and the Kansas Real Estate Sales Validation Questionnaire (SVQ) which are closed by state statute. Public records can be obtained by doing a background check online or by visiting the Register of Deeds office in person during office hours.

In order to obtain a marriage license in Saline County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
