Barton County is located in the state of Kansas. The county was formed in February 26, 1867 and named after Clara Barton, responsible for the founding of the American Red Cross. The county seat is Great Bend. As of 2013, the county has a population of 27509. The county has a total area of 901 square miles, 895 square miles of which is land, and 5.2 square miles is water. The county consists of 10 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 67530 recorded as the one with the largest population. Register of Deeds

The primary function of the office is the recording of real estate related documents, deeds, mortgages, assignments of mortgages or other interests in real estate, easements, or other documents involving real estate. The register of deeds’ responsibility is to “have custody of and safely keep and preserve all books, records, deeds, maps, papers and microphotographs” submitted for recording. (K.S.A. 19-1204) The office is also the repository for “maps and plats of cities, subdivisions or additions to the same within (each) county.” (K.S.A. 2010 Supp. 19-1207)

Appraiser
The County Appraiser, with the assistance of staff members, is responsible for the discovery, listing and the uniform and equitable appraisal of all taxable and exempt real and personal property in compliance with the constitution and statutes of the State of Kansas for tax purposes.
