Lyon County, Iowa Overview

Lyon County, positioned in the northwest corner of the state was established in 1851. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,581. The county seat, and largest community is Rock Rapids. The county was named for Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon, who served in both the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. General Lyon was killed at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek in 1861, and the county, previously called Buncombe, was renamed in General Lyon’s memory in 1862. The county’s total area is 588 square miles, all of which is land. Lyon County is the location of Gitchie Manitou State Preserve, which contains some of the oldest exposed bedrock in the country. In addition, Lake Pahoja is in the northwest part of the county. It is a man-made lake with an area of just over 70 acres. Adjacent counties include; Rock County, and Nobles County Minnesota to the north and northeast, Osceola and Sioux counties to the east and south, and Lincoln and Minnehaha counties in South Dakota to the west and northwest.
