Story County, Iowa

Story County is in the state of Iowa. The county was formed in 1846 and named after Joseph Story, a preeminent United States Supreme Court Justice. Ames is the largest city in the county, while Nevada is the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 89,524 people and a total area of 574 square miles, of which 0.8 square miles is water and 573 square miles is land. Story County borders the following counties: Hamilton County to the northwest, Hardin County to the northeast, Marshall County to the east, Jasper County to the southeast, Polk County to the south, and Boone County to the west.

The Story County Recorder’s office was created in 1839 by the First Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Iowa. The recorder’s office is charged with the responsibility of maintaining all public records in the county. Documents maintained by the recorder’s office include but are not limited to affidavits, assignments, bills of sale, condemnations, contracts, deeds, financing statements, land surveys, leases, military discharges, mortgages, releases, section corner certificates, state and federal tax liens, subdivision plats, trade names  and vital records(birth, marriage and death records).

Vital records can only be obtained in person or by mail. Applications to obtain vital records must be in writing, with details of the record, accompanied by satisfactory photo identification, and must satisfactorily establish entitlement to the record being requested. Entitled persons include the person named on the record (if 18 and above) or that person’s spouse, parents, children, grandparents, or legal representative or guardian. Applicants must be 18 or older.
$20 fee is required for a certified copy. Each additional copy of the same record is also $20. Note that the $20 search fee is not refundable if the record is not located.  The fee is payable by check or money order to the “Story County Recorder’s Office”.

In order to obtain a marriage license in Story County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
