Des Moines County, Iowa Overview

Des Moines County, located in the U.S. state of Iowa, had a population of 40,325 as of the 2010 census. The county seat and largest community is Burlington, and it is one of only two original counties in the state, organized by the Michigan Territorial legislature in 1834. Be careful not to confuse the county with the city of the same name, which is in Polk County. They were both named for the Des Moines River, which now forms a border between Iowa and Missouri. Other adjacent counties include Louisa County, IA to the north, Lee County, IA to the south and Henry County, IA to the west. The largest zip code in the county is 52601, and 11 other zip codes are also used in the area.
