Cook County, Illinois

Cook County is located in the state of Illinois. The county was created by an act of the Illinois General Assembly on January 15, 1831, out of Putnam County. Cook County is named after Daniel Cook, the state’s first Attorney General. Chicago is the county seat, the third-most populous city in the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 5,194,675 people and a total area of 1,635 square miles, of which 690 square miles is water and 945 square miles is land. It is the sixth largest county in Illinois by land area, and the largest in total area. With over 40 percent of all Illinois residents, Cook County is the most populous county in Illinois and the 2nd most populous county in the country. Cook County borders the following counties:  Lake County to the north; Lake County, Indiana, to the southeast; Will County to the south; DuPage County to the west; Kane County to the west; McHenry County to the northwest; and Berrien County, Michigan, to the east across Lake Michigan.

The Cook County Recorder of Deeds is charged with the responsibility of maintaining all documents relating to land records in the county. These records can be accessed by doing a public records search online through the Cook County Recorder of Deeds Website. While on the website, remember to check the fee schedule applicable when requesting copies of public records. The other way to obtain land records is by visiting the Recorder of Deeds’ office in person. You will be required to submit a records request form with the details of the records you are requesting. Cook County Marriage License Office
In order to obtain a marriage license in Cook County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
