Sangamon County, Illinois

Sangamon County is located in central Illinois. Springfield is the county seat as well as the state capital. As of the 2010 census, the population was 197,465. The total area is 877 square miles. The county was named for the Sangamon River, which flows through the center. Its most famous resident was President Abraham Lincoln.  

The United States Constitution gives the public freedom to own property; that freedom is protected by the Recorder’s Office that permanently records all documents relating to real property transactions and property ownership within Sangamon County. Records maintained by the office of the recorder include but are not limited to releases and assignments, property liens, subdivision plats, land surveys, monument records, deeds, mortgages, and assorted federal, state, and local liens. Other documents included are instruments pertaining to the Uniform Commercial Code, corporation papers, and veteran’s discharge papers. The most famous documents recorded by the Sangamon County Recorder’s Office are those of Abraham Lincoln; however, many other notable names can also be found on record.

The Sangamon County Recorder’s office has made available online records and document images that date back to June 1, 1986. However, if you have the specific document number of a document image, you can access a document image that dates back to as early as 1959. To do a public records search online, you will have to visit the Sangamon County Recorder Website. While on the website, remember to view the fee schedule applicable when requesting public records. A copy costs $2 for the first two pages and 25 cents for any additional page.

The other way to access documents maintained by the recorder’s office is by visiting the office in person.  Recorded documents can be viewed in the recorder’s office on microfiche and microfilm. When you visit the recorder’s office, the staff will direct you how to use the free public terminals to search for information. All records in the recorder’s office can only be searched by the grantee (buyer) or grantor (seller) name index. The recorder’s office is not allowed by law to perform title searches; the office can only provide you with information available on the record.
