Marion County is located in the state of Illinois. The county was formed in 1823 and named after Revolutionary War Gen. Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox”. The county seat is Salem. As of 2013, the county has a population of 38622. The county has a total area of 576 square miles, 572 square miles of which is land, and 3.7 square miles is water.
