Lemhi County, Idaho Overview

Lemhi County is located in the U.S. state of Idaho. The county was formed in 1869 and named after the Limhi, the King of the Nephites, according to the Book of Mormon. The county seat is Salmon. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 7,712 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,569 square miles, of which 4,563 square miles is land and 5.4 square miles is water. Lemhi County borders the following counties: Idaho County, Idaho to the northwest; Ravalli County, Montana to the north; Beaverhead County, Montana to the northeast; Clark County, Idaho to the east; Butte County, Idaho to the south; Custer County, Idaho to the southwest; and Valley County, Idaho to the west. Lemhi County Clerk/Auditor/Recorder’s Office Information

The County Clerk has five titles: Clerk of the District Court, Auditor, Recorder, Clerk of the Board of County Commissioners, and Chief Elections Officer of the County. The County Clerk also oversees County Assistance. Officially, the Clerk of the District Court serves as ex officio Auditor and Recorder and ex officio Clerk of the Board of County Commissioners.

The Auditor acts as the County Budget and Accounting Officer. Main responsibilities include compiling budget requests, submitting the budget to the Board of County Commissioners; recording appropriations made to county agencies, the outstanding liabilities against these appropriations and the expenditures made against the appropriations; keeping accounting records on the revenues, expenditures, and balances in each county fund. The Auditor is also responsible for preparing and remitting checks to employees, vendors, and other parties entitled to payments.

The Recorder is responsible to keep records of all documents recorded in Lemhi County. The Recorder office is also responsible for issuing marriage licenses, processing passports, recording land documents, including plat maps, surveys, easements, liens, and other types of legal documents. The recording fee is every instrument, paper or notice, for the first page is $10.00 and $3.00 for each additional page.

Lemhi County District Court Information

The Clerk of the District Court is responsible for the records generated and filed with the District and Magistrate Courts of Lemhi County. The department has offices of Bonds, Fines, and Court Records. These offices collect fines, fees, and penalties assessed in the District Court and Magistrate Court. These offices are also responsible for the safekeeping of all the files and records pertaining to these courts. The offices are under the combined supervision of the Clerk of the Court of Lemhi County and the Trial Court Administrator for the Seventh Judicial District Court and are staffed by the Deputies of the Clerk of the Court.

The duty of the Assessor is to re-evaluate and assess all real and personal property at market value within Lemhi County for property tax purposes. The assessor also serves as the agent of the Department of Idaho Transportation in titling and registering vehicles.
