Carroll County, Georgia

Carroll County is located in west central Georgia, bordering the state of Alabama and lying west of Atlanta. As of the 2010 census, the population was 110,527. It was established in 1826 and named for Charles Carroll, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence at the time. The total area is 504 square miles. The county seat is Carrollton, which is also the largest city in the county.

The Carroll County Clerk of Courts is charged with the responsibility of recording and maintaining all documents related to criminal and civil proceedings in the county. In addition, the clerk’s office supports every court proceeding with the presence of a Deputy Clerk.  The mission of the County Clerk’s Office is to accurately record, index, and maintain minutes, documents and records of all proceedings of the Carroll County Board of Commissioners. Furthermore, the clerk’s office strives to make public records readily available for review and inspection by the public and staff of Carroll County. Documents maintained by the clerk’s office include meeting agendas, meeting minutes, resolutions, and ordinances.

The Georgia Open Records Act states that the public is allowed to inspect and obtain copies of public records; the County Clerk’s office is responsible for ensuring compliance with public records requests for records of the Board of Commissioners. Public records requests can be directed to the County Clerk’s office, the county division that maintains the records, or by doing a background check online. When making a public records request, remember to include the following information: the requestor’s contact information and personal details (name, phone number, mailing address, email), the records you are requesting with as many specific details as possible (dates, subjects, types of record, author), and the preferred method to receive records (mail, in person, email, fax).
