Sevier County, Arkansas Overview

Sevier County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,058. The county seat, and largest community is De Queen. Sevier County is Arkansas’s sixteenth county, formed on October 17, 1828, and named for Ambrose Sevier, U.S. Senator from Arkansas. It is an alcohol prohibition or dry county. Sevier County was organized on October 17, 1828 under legislative authority. It was formed from Hempstead and Miller Counties. Five days later, October 22, 1818, the legislature expanded the county’s border, incorporating more land south of the Red River. Hempstead, Miller and Crawford Counties as well as the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory bound Sevier County. The establishment of Sevier County became effective on November 1, 1828. The county seat has undergone several changes since Sevier County was organized. The first county seat was Paraclifta. In 1871, the Lockes donated 120 acres of land. As a result, the county seat was moved to Lockesburg. In 1905, the county seat was again moved to De Queen. Sevier County is known as “The Land of Lakes”, “The Land of Fruits and Flowers” and “The Home of Friendly People”. The county has five lakes within a 35-mile radius, five rivers and mountain streams and forests. The total area of the county is 581 square miles, 565 of which is land, and the remaining 16 is water. The county is home to nationally protected, Pond Creek National Wildlife Refuge. One Oklahoma county borders to the west, McCurtain County. Four other Arkansas counties border to north (Polk), east (Howard), southeast (Hempstead) and south (Little River County). Six zip codes cover the county, with the largest being 71832.

The County Clerk is responsible for the daily operations of the County Clerk Office, Quorum Court Secretary, Budget Account Figures, and delegating the responsibilities of the office. The County Clerk Chief Deputy is responsible for the daily payment of county invoices, in charge of the county probate files, in charge of tax work, Equalization Board Secretary, and assisting at the counter with marriage licenses. The County Clerk Deputy is responsible for all county payroll procedures and for all voter registration records and assists at the counter with marriage licenses.

The Circuit Clerk is the clerk of the circuit, domestic relations, and juvenile court and usually acts as the ex-officio recorder of the county. The Circuit Clerks office prepares summons, warrants, orders, judgments, and injunctions authorized by the circuit court for delivery by the county sheriff. This office also maintains a file of all cases pending in either court, as well as a record of all past court cases and their disposition. In addition, the circuit clerk keeps a list of all prospective jurors. The Chief Deputy helps maintain the records of all proceedings of the circuit courts and to prepare the dockets for these courts. In addition, the clerk keeps a list of all prospective jurors. The Deputy Clerk is responsible for recording deeds, mortgages, liens and surety bonds, and many other orders and instruments which involve property within the county.
