Cherokee County is located in the U.S. state of Alabama. The county was formed in 1836 and named after the Cherokee people, whose lands also include Northeast Alabama. The county seat is Centre. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 26,203 people. According to the 2000 census, the county has a total area of 600 square miles, of which 554 square miles is land and 46 square miles is water. Cherokee County is the second-smallest county in Alabama by land area. Cherokee County borders the following counties: DeKalb County to the north; Chattooga County, Georgia to the northeast; Floyd County, Georgia to the east; Polk County, Georgia to the southeast; Cleburne County to the south; Calhoun County to the south; and Etowah County to the west.
