Waukesha County is located in the southeastern region of Wisconsin. The county seat is also called Waukesha. The county was formed in 1846 from part of Milwaukee County. Its name is an Anglicized version of the name Waagoshag (Ojibwe) or Wau-tsha (Potawatomi) who was the leader of the local tribe during the time of the first European settlement in the area. The county’s total area is 581 square miles with a population of 389,891, making this the third most populated county in the state. The adjacent counties are Washington County in the north, Milwaukee County in the east, Racine County in the southeast, Walworth County in the southwest, Jefferson County in the west, and Dodge County in the northwest.
