Trempealeau County, Wisconsin Overview

Trempealeau County is located in the West Central region of Wisconsin. Its county seat is Whitehall. The county was formed in 1854 and organized a year later. It was name after the Trempealeau River which, in turn, got its name due to the bluff surrounded by water located at the mouth of the river. French fur traders named the river La Montagne qui trempe à l’eau which means ‘mountain steeped in water.’ The county’s total area measures 742 square miles. According to the 2010 census, 28,816 people are living in the county. The adjacent counties are Eau Claire County in the north, Jackson County in the east, La Crosse County in the southeast, Winona County (MN) in the southwest, and Buffalo County in the west.
