Shawano County is located in the northeastern region of Wisconsin. The county seat is also called Shawano. The county was created in 1861. Its name is derived from the Ojibwa word that means “southern,” indicating its location at the southern boundary of the Ojibwa nation. The total area of the county is 909 square miles with a population of 41,949 (2010). The surrounding counties are Menominee County in the north, Oconto County in the northeast, Brown County in the southeast, Outagamie County in the south, Waupaca County in the southwest, Marathon County in the west, and Langlade County in the northwest.
