Rusk County, Wisconsin Overview

Rusk County is located in Northern Wisconsin. Its county seat is Ladysmith. The county was created in 1901 and originally named Gates County in honor of James L. Gates, a Milwaukee land speculator. In 1905, the county was renamed in honor of Jeremiah M. Rusk who was the first US Secretary of Agriculture and former governor of the state. The total area of the county is 931 square miles with a population of 14,755 (2010). The surrounding counties are Sawyer County in the north, Price County in the east, Taylor County in the southeast, Chippewa County in the south, and Barron County in the west.
