Portage County, Wisconsin Overview
Portage County is located in the West Central region of Wisconsin. Its county seat is Stevens Point. The county was formed in 1836 from Wisconsin Territory and later organized in 1844. It was named after the portage located at the Fox-Wisconsin Waterway. Based in the 2010 census, 70,019 people live in the 823-square mile area of the county. It is bordered by Marathon County in the north, Waupaca County in the east, Waushara County in the south, Adams County in the southwest, and Wood County in the west.
