Polk County is located in Northern Wisconsin. Its county seat is Balsam Lake. The county was formed in 1853 and named in honor of James Knox Polk, the 11th US President. The county’s total area is 956 square miles with a population of 44,205 (2010). The adjacent counties are Burnett County in the north, Barron County in the east, St. Croix County in the south, Washington County (MN) in the southwest, and Chisago County (MN) in the west. The County Clerk provides a wide variety of services to the public. He/she provides clerical and administrative services to the County Board and acts as the official record keeper of multiple county documents. The Clerk is also the chief election official, coordinating all elections in the county. In addition, the Clerk acts as a passport agent and provides motor vehicle services such as title transfers, temporary license plates, and vehicle renewals. Other duties of the Clerk include issuing marriage licenses, domestic partnership agreements, dog licenses, timber cutting permits, and large assembly permits.
