Marathon County is located in the West Central region of Wisconsin. Its county seat is Wausau. The county was created in 1850 from Portage County and named after the town Marathon, Greece which was the site of the battle of Marathon in 490 BCE. The county’s total area is 1,576 square miles with a population of 134,063. The adjacent counties are Lincoln County in the north, Langlade County in the northeast, Shawano County in the east, Portage County in the south, Wood County in the southwest, Clark County in the west, and Taylor County in the northwest. Marathon County Officials Information
The County Clerk serves as the chief election official of the county. He/she is responsible for coordinating all county-wide elections as well as overseeing voter registration. The Clerk is also responsible for issuing marriage licenses and declarations of domestic partnerships, providing passport application services, issuing DNR hunting and fishing licenses, providing direct seller’s permits and timber cutting permits, issuing temporary car license plates, and distributing dog licenses to local municipal treasurers.

The Clerk also performs other duties such as acting as the filing agent for Farmland Preservation, receiving claims filed against the county, and keeping a record of contracts and leases of the county.
