Manitowoc County is located in the northeastern region of Wisconsin. Its county seat is also called Manitowoc. The county was established in 1836 before Wisconsin was considered a state. It was later organized in 1848. It was named after a small river within the area, The word Manitowoc comes from the Native American word “manito” which means “spirit” or “mysterious influence.” According to the 2010 census, there are 81,442 people living in the 1,494-square mile area. The county is bordered in the northeast by Kewaunee County, in the south by Sheboygan County, in the west by Calumet County, and in the northwest by Brown County.
