Lafayette County is located in the South Central region of Wisconsin. Its county seat is Darlington. The county was created in 1846 as part of Wisconsin Territory. It was named after the Marquis de Lafayette who aided the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The county’s total area is 635 square miles with a population of 16,836 (2010). The adjacent counties are Iowa County in the north, Green County in the east, Stephenson County (IL) in the southeast, Jo Daviess County (IL) in the south, and Grant County in the west.
