La Crosse County is located in the West Central region of Wisconsin. The county seat is also called La Crosse. The county was created in 1851. The county was named after the town which was originally called Prairie de La Crosse by Lieutenant Pike after he witnessed Native Americans in the area playing a lacrosse-type game. The name of the town was eventually shortened to La Crosse. The total area of the county is 480 square miles. Based in the 2010 census, there are 114,638 people living in the county. The adjacent counties are Jackson County in the north, Monroe County in the east, Vernon County in the south, Houston County (MN) in the southwest, Winona County (MN) in the west, and Trempealeau County in the northwest.
