Jefferson County is located in the South Central region of Wisconsin. The county seat is also called Jefferson. The county was established as part of Wisconsin Territory back in 1836. It was later organized in 1839. The county was named after Jefferson County located in New York which was the place where the original settlers came from. Based on the 2010 census, there are 83,686 people living in the 583-square mile area. The county is bordered in the north by Dodge County, in the east by Waukesha County, in the southeast by Walworth County, in the southwest by Rock County, and in the west by Dane County.
