Green County, Wisconsin Overview

Green County is located in the south central region of Wisconsin. The county seat is Monroe. The county was formed as part of the Wisconsin Territory in 1837. It was named in honor of a well-known general in the American Revolutionary War, Nathanael Greene. The county’s total area is 584 square miles and its population is 36,842 (2010). The counties bordering the area are Dane County in the north, Rock County in the east, Winnebago County (IL) in the southeast, Stephenson County (IL) in the south, Lafayette County in the west, and Iowa County in the northwest.
