Dane County, Wisconsin Overview
Dane County is located in the South Central region of Wisconsin. Madison serves as the county seat as well as the state capital. The county was created in 1836 as a territorial county and named in honor of a Massachusetts delegate to the Congress of the Confederation, Nathan Dane. He helped draft the Northwest Ordinance from where the constitution of Wisconsin is based. The total area of the county is 1,238 square miles. Based on the 2017 census, there are approximately 536,416 people living in this area, making it the second most populated county in the state.
