Crawford County is located in the West Central region of Wisconsin. Its county seat is Prairie du Chien. The county was created in 1818 by the Michigan Territorial legislature and named in honor of William H. Crawford who served as Treasurer during James Monroe’s term. The total area of the county is 599 square miles with a population of 16,644 (2010). The adjacent counties are Vernon County in the north, Richland County in the east, Grant County in the south, Clayton County (IA) in the southwest, and Allamakee County (IA) in the west. The County Clerk provides several services to the county departments and agencies as well as to the public. These include issuing marriage licenses, selling hunting and fishing licenses, issuing dog licenses, issuing temporary license plates, and issuing registrations for boats under 14 feet, ATVs, and snowmobiles.
